Considerations of Off-Grid Living

shutterstock 82743469 300x300 Considerations of Off Grid LivingThe thought of going off grid is a pipe dream for many green living enthusiasts.  Financial issues, investment alternatives and breaking from modern technology can all be reasons that keep many lifestylers  away from going off the grid.  However, there are several individuals out there you have no problem breaking from modern technology and are ready to make the investment to go off the grid.  Before making the final leap to off-grid living, there are a few considerations you may want to think about.

Lifestyle Changes

There are several lifestyle changes that should be considered when making a move to off-grid living.  One of those lifestyle changes is with hygiene.  Depending on the kind of off-grid lifestyle you want you may need to consider how you will shower, wash up, wash dishes, brush your teeth and handle daily hydration.  Not to mention toileting needs may change depending  on the kind of off-grid  lifestyle you consider.  Many people who consider off-grid living consider it shocking to find out that they may have to turn off their regular toilet and purchase a composting toilet or that they will no longer have central air and heat options even with solar panels.

Food Preparation

A consideration that should be discussed with off-grid living is food preparation.  Currently many people reading this blog will think that they can just have a refrigerator that runs off solar power or that they can have an oven and cooking option that runs from the same source.  Though this may be true the cost for a solar panel of refrigerator can be staggering.  In instances where off-grid lifestyle is the goal, refrigeration options and alternatives must be considered as well as storing and preparing foods.  Oftentimes many off-grid lifestylists find that it is easier to switch to an outdoor grill option or solar oven option.  All of these things must be considered prior to entering and the lifestyle.

Communication

Communication is something that many do not consider.  Though cellular phones can be charged with solar charging options that does not mean that the cellphone will have service in an off-grid suitable area.  Oftentimes an off-grid area means that the land itself is completely away from cellular towers or any kind of modern convenience.  This means communication through the Internet, cell phones or other services may be slightly prohibited or completely unavailable.  Satellite phones and other options should be considered for communication, Internet and telephone needs.
