Solar Power

Solar power is one of the easiest ways to determine if you really want to live off the grid. It is also a way to gradually introduce yourself to off grid living. Eventually, you can move to using solar power as a full time energy source.

Small Farming

When people think of an off grid lifestyle they tend to think closer to home. Electrcity is the first thing to go but what about a complete off the grid lifestyle that requires you to be fully sustainable and independent? That type of lifestyle means providing your own food. Start with window farming first. A small garden that will allow you to see what it takes to provide your own small fruits and vegetables. After a short amount of time you can progress to raising small animals like chickens for meat and eggs, goats for dairy or rabbits for meat.

Water Supply

If you live on your own land and you want to move off the grid then a water supply may be an issue. Find out how you can supply your own water to your home and get off the water grid as well. For some people this may mean moving to a new location but others, who already live near streams or lakes, may be able to have a solution closer to home.

Tiny Homes

A tiny home, like the ones offered by Tumbleweed Homes, is a good option if you plan on moving off the grid. These small homes can run on one solar panel and can move easily if water sources and other sustainable living options become an issue. Tiny homes can be equipped with water filtration devices that allow you to use rainwater as drinking, bathing and cooking water as well.
