Green Living Gone Wrong

There are several companies and fly by night sites that will use the green living motto to swindle people out of money or convince them that their product is natural and green. Here are a few red flags to look out for when you are moving into a green living lifestyle.

Ongoing Purchases

Keep in mind that green living is all about the 3 R’s. Reduce is the first of those R’s. When a company claims to offer green living benefits, but they ask you to continue to purchase an item that does not live up to the 3 R’s then you know to stay away. A prime example of this is bottled water. Bottled water was and still is billed as a healthy alternative to chemical based non-filtered water. The problem is that the bottles are biodegradable and recyclable but when hundreds of thousands of people purchase the plastic bottled goodness the landfills fill up all the same and reduction of waste is still an issue. What’s the best solution? Reusable bottles made of recycled materials that can be refilled at home with a faucet using a recyclable filter.

All Natural

Something to remember about the term all natural is that chemicals and trace minerals can still be found in the product while being natural. Magnesium and sodium are still natural  but they can also be harmful in high quantities. Just because a sign says all natural it does not mean it is necessarily good for you or the environment.

Eco-Friendly

The term eco-friendly can be incredibly misleading and is overly misused as a marketing ploy to get people to buy a product. In recent studies, there were several home cleaning products studied based on the term eco-friendly. It turned out that eco-friendly did not mean there were less chemicals, better chemicals or natural ingredients. The term eco-friendly simply meant that a certain percentage of the product was biodegradable. This percentage could be composed of the packaging and not the product within the packaging. So, to be sure that you are getting something that is truly eco-friendly make sure that the ingredients as well as the packaging are safe for the environment, water and agriculture.
