The first steps into green living mean facing information that may not be accurate. In fact, a lot of people new to green living may not research information right away and accept what so-called experts say as fact. It may not surprise you to find that the world of green living has its lies, fables and falsehoods. Here are four common false statements about green living that may surprise you.
Off Means no Electricity
This is the most popular false statement about green living. If you turn off an appliance or any item that uses electricity then no power is being used. This is completely false. Any appliance that is plugged in, regardless if it is off or on, it will still use some amount of electricity. If you want to prevent the energy being used by the appliance while not in use then simply unplug it. Unplugged means no energy is being used.
There is no Difference Between Conservation and Efficiency
Another common false statement about green living is that if you are conserving energy then you are also being energy efficient. These two terms mean two totally different things. If you are conserving energy then you are reducing the consumption of energy. If you are being efficient with energy then you are using less energy but you are still consuming energy. Think of a lighted ceiling fan. If you are switch off the lights and use only a table lamp with an energy efficient bulb then you are conserving the energy by reducing the amount from several bulbs to one bulb. If you continue to use the lighted ceiling fan with three to four energy efficient bulbs then are you using less energy but you are still using all four sockets.
Hybrid is Better
Hybrid vehicles are the better choice for the environment than a standard vehicle. Again, this is a common false statement about green living. The truth is that Hybrid products, such as cars, take more energy to produce than they conserve. They are like bottled water in that respect. It takes more energy to make the item that is supposed to be green and environmentally better than the item itself gives back.
