Keeping children active and enjoying everything the environment has to offer them can be difficult. This is especially true during the summer months. Kids are out of school and eager to play the next MMORPG, surf the net or just kick back and watch movies. So, how do you keep active minds engaged while trying to give them active bodies? Here are three ways that will help you get children outside and offline this summer.
Create a Green Space
Green spaces are popping up all over the country as a way for people to come together and enjoy nature, the environment and cultivate a community. These green spaces can be created with the use of organization sites, meet up sites and local classified ads. Bring other green living families together and plan outdoor activities that allow the kids to meet others their own age and enjoy the environment together.
Host a Vacation Earth School
You have heard of Vacation Bible School right? Why not a Vacation Earth School? Work with families in your community or neighborhood to create a completely outdoor based school. Meet in free areas like parks and teach children about nature, solar energy and environmental issues. Plan hikes, bike riding days and visits to local state parks in the area. End the Earth School with a camping weekend.
Use the Backyard
So many families have lovely backyard areas that they never use. It may be too hot or there may not be enough shade. These are two great issues that can come together under an even greater opportunity to bring kids outside. Build a recycled water misting station that will mist the backyard area making it cooler. Use rainwater instead of flowing tap water and a water pump to cycle the water instead of a faucet. Find biodegradable tarps and create shade. Continue using the shade at night for camping and use the new shade as a dual rain tarp to collect rainwater for plants and other green living projects.
