Every homeowner and contractor knows that the two harshest seasons on a home’s energy consumption are summer and winter. Proper insulation is key for any home to cut back on energy loss throughout the house. The problem is that insulation, at least the pink stuff we all grew to know, is not exactly the most green substance. There is hope though. Companies like Idaho Blue are now offering green options including recycled denim insulation. This particular type of insulation offers several benefits for homeowners with green living in mind.
Thermal Insulation
R-value is how insulation is rated. The higher the R-value the better the insulation is for energy efficiency. The current R-value ratings for recycled denim insulation range from R-13 to R-19 depending on the square footage of the area. This makes recycled denim an equal alternative to the pink fiberglass most commonly used in home insulation projects.
Air Quality
As fiberglass insulation degrades, small particles will begin to enter in the air. Think about how harmful that is. Now think about what occurs when someone is laying out fiberglass pink foam in your attic or walls. What is the first thing that they do? They cover their face to prevent particles from entering their lungs. The second thing they do is make sure their arms and neck area is covered. They do this because the fiberglass particles can irritate and even leave small abrasions on the skin. Now, imagine those same particles entering your air vents and into the air you and your children breathe daily. Denim does not do that.
Fire Resistance
Recycled denim insulation has a Class-A fire resistance rating. This is the highest resistance to fire available and means that the recycled denim would be less likely to spread fire should a fire break out in the home. Fiberglass insulation, recycled paper insulation and other alternatives do not have that same resistance. As with all insulation and home improvement projects, prices will vary. The use of recycled denim is becoming increasingly popular with insulation companies. This means that stores like Lowe’s, Home Depot and area contractors carry the denim insulation products or they have the ability and training to install the insulation.
