How to Start a Green Homeschool Plan

How to Start a Green Homeschool Plan
If you have made the choice to homeschool your children, you have joined 700,000 other families doing the same thing. There are many benefits to homeschooling your children and you no doubt have your own reasons. Another benefit is the ability to create school plans and projects centered on being green. You can teach your children all of the necessary subjects with adding an environmentally-friendly theme. They will learn why it is important to reduce their carbon footprint and how best to go about it.

Crafts and Art Projects

There are many ways to combine the art and creativity portion of your child's homeschool day into one that educates them about green energy. For example, you can find kits at your local science, discovery or craft store that let them build models such as weather stations, solar generators, solar-powered robots and wind power stations. During the process of creating the item, you can use this time to inform them of the importance of solar and renewable energy and add this to part of your homeschooling plan.

Field Trips

Going on field trips around town is another great way of adding green energy and being environmentally friendly to you homeschool lesson plans. Start by going somewhere without electricity such as to local campgrounds. By visiting the campgrounds either for a day trip or a weekend excursion, you can use this opportunity to teach them about sustainable living and renewable energy, showing them how to use solar energy for powering various things they need. Going to a camp site with fishing capabilities is equally helpful as you can also teach them how someone living in this environment would catch, prepare and cook their own food without electricity.

Go Solar in the Kitchen

Spend a day with the kids learning how to cook using solar heat. Start by showing them how to make or build a solar oven, which also come available in different kits. Show them the math you need for using the right kind of temperatures and how to break down the recipe for a certain number of people. Do the cooking outdoors using solar heat for the solar oven.

Green Themes

You can also choose a theme related to green living during a week or month of your homeschooling plan. This can include a variety of the things previously discussed such as spending one day fishing or camping without electricity, another day with your children learning about how to cook with solar heat, another day with the children being educated while doing green crafts and another day with more hands-on projects. Explore the benefits of green living and the impact recycling and conserving your energy has on the environment.
